Are you thinking about refinishing or installing new hardwood flooring? Or do you already have a stain and type of wood in mind? Well before you jump ahead too much, know that selecting the right flooring company is just as important as choosing the right flooring material.

At Barnum Floors, we have over 25 years of experience and receive questions daily about hardwood floors and our expertise. Here is our advice for knowing you’re working with the right flooring company!

Reviews

Before you even reach out to a company, reviews can be a large indicator of green or red flags. Reviews should be available and easy to find on a company website, Google Business Profile, social media, or a third-party website (like Yelp). If you’re not able to find any reviews, this can be a sign the company has not been in business for a while or lacks the expertise to do your floors.

Try and find the details below within the reviews. Also, make sure the reviews are relevant and timely.

  • How is their customer service?
  • How is the quality of the project
  • What was the timeline of the project?
  • Would they hire them again?
  • Do they work with large companies or do residential work?

Within reviews (or on a company’s website), try and find portfolio pieces too. A company or customer displaying previous work is a great sign that the company produced a quality project and was good to work with.

Expertise And Professionalism

After completing your research, it’s time to reach out to contractors! Reach out to at least three companies to receive differing viewpoints on the project cost, timeline, material suggestions, and more. Receiving different quotes allows you to get a feel for that company, along with their expertise and professionalism. Do not be afraid to ask companies multiple questions, as this will help you decide who to choose for your project. Consider asking the following questions:

  • How long have you been in the flooring business?
  • Do you have any references from previous clients?
  • What types of hardwood flooring do you recommend for my specific needs and lifestyle?
  • Can you provide samples of different wood species and finishes?
  • What is the estimated timeline for the installation or refinishing process?
  • Can you provide a detailed written estimate, including any potential additional costs?
  • Are there any hidden fees or charges I should be aware of?
  • Can you explain the steps involved in the installation or refinishing process?
  • What maintenance is required for the specific type of flooring you recommend?
  • How do you handle the cleanup and disposal of materials after the project is completed?

A professional and knowledgeable hardwood floor contractor should be able to answer these, and more, without hesitation. By asking questions, you’re ensuring that you are going to get the results you want!

Insured and Licensed

Lastly, but importantly, make sure the company you work with is insured & licensed. Promising these things can show that a company is legitimate and professional.

Insurance

Working with a business you know is insured eliminates any risk on your end if something goes wrong during your project. Insurance will cover you if damage occurs to your property, a worker is injured, the company doesn’t complete the job, etc. This is crucial so you don’t have to worry about covering any of these costs.

Licensed

Licensed contractors have to undergo necessary training and education in their field to become certified, so having a licensed contractor work on your property is a clear sign they are a reputable contractor and know what they’re doing. Also, they provide peace of mind because they are usually authorized to get permits and comply with local regulations.
